01Overview

Switchboard Upgrades in Sydney

Many Sydney homes built before the 1990s still have their original switchboard: ceramic fuses, one safety switch or none, and crowded circuits.

An upgrade replaces old fuses with modern circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs or RCBOs). It's one of the best safety upgrades you can make, and it usually fixes nuisance tripping too.

02Warning signs

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

Old switchboard with ceramic fuses, a brittle black backing board and scorch marks
  1. 01

    Ceramic or rewireable fuses

If you still replace fuse wire, your board is overdue for an upgrade.

  2. 02

    No safety switch

Nothing cuts the power quickly if someone gets a shock.

  3. 03

    Nuisance tripping

One safety switch on many circuits means one fault can darken half the house.

  4. 04

    Black or brittle backing board

It may contain asbestos. We'll check before any work starts.

  5. 05

    Planning a renovation

A new kitchen, air conditioning or solar often needs more capacity.

  6. 06

    Heat, buzzing or scorch marks

Any heat at the switchboard needs checking straight away.

03What's included

What you get when we do the job

Every job is tested before handover and finished with a clean-up. Here's what's covered.

Included

  • Inspection of board, wiring and earthing
  • New board with modern circuit breakers
  • RCD or RCBO safety switches
  • Clearly labelled circuits
  • Every circuit tested before handover
  • CCEW certificate

RCD or RCBO: what's the difference?

An RCD (residual current device) cuts power within milliseconds if current leaks to earth, such as through a person. AS/NZS 3000 requires 30mA RCD protection on power and lighting circuits for new work, with no more than three circuits per RCD.

An RCBO protects a single circuit, so a fault on the garden lights won't turn off the fridge. It costs a little more and suits most homes best. We'll price both.

Licensed work to AS/NZS 3000, with a Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) where required.
